The core instruction in Finnish occurs in Scand 301 and 302, an intensive Finnish course sequence offered every second year (generally in academic years that begin with an odd number, as in 2009-10, 2011-12, etc.) Each course consists of eight contact hours per week plus extensive listening and reading exercises for homework. We have generally used the textbook Kuulostaa hyvältä plus various supplementary materials. Instruction is based on proficiency goals, which are set by the instructor at the start of the course with input from the student learners. Some examples of proficiency goals are detailed for each course.
